Since 2006,
Brevard Music Aid (a 501c Not For Profit) has played a major role
in assisting local professional musicians in times of crisis. Completely funded
by donations, the Brevard Music Aid ideal came to life out of the offices of
local magazine, 'Brevard Live'.
President and CEO, Heike Clarke, formed a small team of like-minded musicians who collectively saw a need to assist Brevard-area local musicians with emergency funding. From doctors appointments to household basics, these dollars were made available to those who had no other means of income nor family members with which to turn.
Annually, Brevard Live Magazine hosts the Brevard Live Music Awards. A celebration of local talent, an evening of appreciation, and the primary vehicle that drives donation dollars into the Brevard Music Aid fund. From ticket sales to beverage revenue, the annual BMA gets its annual traction from just one evening of awareness.
Needless to say, one night of donations can only provide so much in financial support for an entire community of musicians.
Enter the BMA website. This vehicle was designed to create higher visibility
and awareness on the efforts of
the Brevard Music Aid efforts in an effort to gain a stronger foothold in our
local community. If you are a music lover, please consider that the majority of
'working' professional musicians put forth an average of 10 hours to perform a 4
hour job. Payment varies from venue to venue, however most musicians generally
receive an average of $70 per job. Those fortunate enough to work five nights
each week earn around $20,000 per year. Less than 1% are offered benefits of
any type. Health, vision and dental are the total responsibility of these
musicians and, in times of crisis, their choices are greatly diminished.
